Giant Hogweed
(Heracleum Mantegazzianum)

Description:
Giant Hogweed can be a biennial or perennial. Most plants are monocarpic; they die after they flower and produce seed. White flowers cluster in an umbrella shape inflorescence can be up to 2.5 feet in diameter across the flat top. Compound leaves are often expanded to 5 feet in breadth. The plant reaches 10-15 feet in height.

Control:

  • Mechanical: Digging entire tuberous root or repeatedly mowing it during the growing season. Protective clothing should be worn to avoid skin contact with the clear, watery sap present in the hollow stems of the plant that can cause painful, burning blisters.
  • Biological: Unknown at this time.
  • Herbicide: Refer to the State Noxious Weed Control Board site
